V-Cut Lettering Course
The V-Cut Lettering Course at Glenarm Castle is for anyone wanting to learn a new skill or start a new hobby.
In this Introduction to traditional skills you will be given all the tools, guidance and help to create a piece of hand cut work by yourself (which can then be taken home).
Beginners will hand carve a V-Cut letter in our oldest and local limestone. If you are feeling eager you could carve your own house number and proudly display it at your front door.
This is a great hands on insight for those with a interest in traditional skills, or to develop skills further in a controlled environment. Trainees will be taught by fully qualified Stone Masons. Every step of the process will be included from correctly stencilling to learning how to use the tools and carving out the letters. You are guaranteed to have fun and leave having learnt a new skill and love for this heritage craft.
You will be given the tools and materials to create a piece unique to yourself. Return classes can be arranged to create larger & more intricate pieces, such as house numbers and names (examples on our main website).
Lime Pointing Course
This introduction course to the traditional skill of Lime Pointing aims to give the learner hands-on practical experience in mixing and use of Lime Mortars, and promote confidence in their use. Lime Mortars are used for the repair and maintenance of traditional buildings. This course will be of interest to the owners of older properties which are pointed in lime, and also garden or boundary walls pointed in lime that have maybe fallen into disrepair. Our Lime Pointing Course is also useful for anyone wishing to create a structure built with, or finished in, lime pointing.
During the course there will be a practical demonstration in the mixing and use of Natural Hydraulic Lime, and how this is applied to builds, finishing, and aftercare. You will then be encouraged to gain your own practical experience, with the guidance of our tutors at hand. For this course you will be provided with all tools, materials and personal protective equipment required. However, we would ask that you please bring protective outdoor clothing and footwear that you don’t mind getting dirty.
Dry Stone Walling Course
Our Dry Stone Walling classes are aimed at giving beginners an introduction to the art of building without mortar. We would expect by the end of the day that you will have an understanding of the basic principals involved in the creation of a dry stone wall, and feel confident enough to take on small sections by yourself.
On the day our tutors will begin by briefing you on the basic principals involved, and the types of tools required fro fry stone walling. This will lead to the practical part of the course where the tutor will demonstrate dry walling, before encouraging the pupil to take on a small section of wall in need of repair themselves.
The Dry Stone Walling course involves lifting and manual labour; however, you will not be expected to exceed what you are comfortable with.
Random Rubble Walling Course
Our Random Rubble Walling Course is aimed at beginners seeking to learn the basic skills involved in random rubble masonry, and aims to give them hands-on practical experience in the various aspects of creating a finished product.
During the classes, our tutors will begin by briefing you on different types of stone and the difficulty levels involved in the working of it. The Random Rubble Walling Course also covers different finishing patterns, methods of dressing in preparation for building, and the building of random stone. This will involve a practical demonstration by the tutors, after which pupils will be invited to use the tools provided to dress their own piece of stone – followed by building it into a section of a wall.
For this class you will be provided with all tools, materials and personal protective equipment required, we would ask that you please bring protective outdoor clothing and footwear that you don’t mind getting dirty.
Maintenance of Historic & Listed Buildings
Our Maintenance of Historic & Listed Buildings course is an introduction to the maintenance and conservation of the fabric of historic, listed and older buildings built using traditional methods.
This course is aimed at the owners of buildings that are not currently maintained as part of a pre-planned schedule, or owners that would aim to carry out or manage the maintenance themselves. The Maintenance of Historic & Listed Buildings course would also be a benefit to owners that do have a pre-planned maintenance schedule in place, as a way of making sure all aspects required are included in their maintenance package.
The classes will begin with a presentation on:
- the types of maintenance required
- what to look for and where
- defects that can result due to the lack of regular checks and preventative works
- remedies for damage caused by issues resulting from defects
The class will then move outside for a walk around the castle and part of the grounds (weather and events permitting), to give practical examples of the types of easy checks owners can carry out themselves. By the end of the day you should be leaving with a far greater knowledge of the upkeep of historical & listed properties, and be capable of putting a planned schedule together.
